Volunteer Opportunities

Considering volunteering - we have 2 great options!

Advocates - Front Line Victim Assistance Volunteers

How do I become a volunteer victim assistance advocate?

Victim Assistance Volunteers, referred to as advocates, are trained in a variety of areas. The Basic training the volunteers receive is recognized by Alberta Justice with a certificate from them. Basic training consists of familiarization training in substance abuse, the criminal justice system, advocate safety, protocol, crisis intervention, suicide awareness, break and enters and sudden death and bereavement.

Volunteers then undergo continuous refresher training to ensure the professionalism and compentency of the unit.

The unit currently consists of a liaison RCMP officer, program coordinator, 8 board members and 12 advocates.

The unit is always looking at recruiting new volunteers as board members or advocates.

"As a volunteer for Victim Services, I cannot do great things, but I can do
small things in a great way because I care. Helping the victim to make each
day a little bit better gives them the hope to move forward."
Leanne Walton

I feel it's time for a victim to have some rights, too many times the criminal or perpetrator gets all the breaks, I'm pleased to be a small part of this. Personally it has given me a feeling of satisfaction to know that I can give assistance, comfort and support to someone in this time of need"
Red Deer Rural Volunteer

As the detachment commander I have worked closely with this group for the past year and a half. I fully support this active program as it works with my investigators to assist victims of crimes in our communities. The advocates who volunteer personify the spirit of the police and the community working together to create a better atmosphere in which to live.
